Our Community Rallies to Save a Dog

Back in May, we asked for your help to reunite veteran Bill with his beloved dog, Bondo, after an unfortunate incident left Bondo in the county shelter with his life hanging in the balance.

Our community showed up in an incredible way.

Nearly 50 donors gave generously, helping us reach our $4,000 goal. This compassion gave Bondo a second chance when he needed it most. Thank you.

As it turns out, raising the money was the easy part.

Our original plan was to reunite Bill and Bondo in a home with a secure fence, an outdoor enclosure, and the liability insurance required for Bondo’s release. But life had other plans. Bill was hospitalized due to pre-existing health issues, and as time passed, it became clear that our reunification plan simply wasn’t going to be possible.

Thankfully, we had already been working behind the scenes with the incredible team at Coco’s Cupboard to secure temporary housing for Bondo. They stepped in without hesitation, pulling him from the county shelter and welcoming him to their facility in Gay, Georgia.

This past week, we made the trip to visit Bondo, and what we found filled our hearts.

The anxious, uncertain dog who had first arrived at Coco’s Cupboard was gone. As soon as Bondo spotted his former neighbor, dog sitter, and longtime advocate, Lynn, his whole face lit up. He bounded over to greet her, covering her with kisses as if no time had passed.

We spent time walking with him and then had the incredible opportunity to participate as Bondo’s handlers during their regular group training classes.

And in that moment we saw something we will never forget.

The dog who had once struggled with intense reactivity was now calmly walking around other dogs with us at the end of his leash. He offered eye contact, focus, sits, downs, and all the skills he has been working so hard to learn. He didn’t simply make it through the class—he was engaged, confident, and happy.

More than anything, Bondo radiated balance and trust. It was a powerful reminder of what is possible when a dog is given the right environment, guidance, and support.

In more than 20 years of rescue, I’ve worked with countless reactive dogs, and I can honestly say what Coco’s Cupboard accomplished with Bondo in just a few short months is extraordinary.

This kind of transformation doesn’t happen by accident. It takes exceptional knowledge, endless patience, unwavering consistency, and an incredible amount of daily commitment. In many cases, progress like this takes much longer—if it happens at all.

We cannot thank this team enough for believing in Bondo, investing in him, and helping him become the dog we always knew he could be. The progress Bondo has made is a testament to what happens when a dog is met with compassion, structure, and people who refuse to give up on him.

On the drive home, I also caught up on veteran Bill.

He’s still living in his apartment, and now that Bondo is no longer there, the complex seems content for him to remain. Even better, he’s made a new friend in the community who checks in on him regularly, so he’s no longer facing everything alone.

Of course, Bill misses Bondo, and there will always be a special bond between them. But sometimes love means making the hardest decision of all—putting someone else’s needs ahead of your own.

Looking at where they both are today, we know in our hearts that Bill simply wasn’t in a position to manage Bondo in the way the county—and Bondo himself—needed. Today, both are safe, supported, and on healthier paths.

One of the greatest lessons from Bondo’s journey is that reactive dogs are not hopeless dogs. They need the right people to see their potential.

With the right environment, knowledgeable trainers, patience, and consistency, incredible transformations are possible. If you’re struggling with a reactive dog, please don’t give up. Ask for help. Invest in training. Progress may not come overnight, but Bondo is living proof that change is possible.

What lies ahead...

There is still a small chance we’ll find Bondo a home that can meet the strict legal requirements that come with his “dangerous dog” designation. We would love nothing more than to see him in that kind of forever home.

But we also know the odds are long, and it’s possible Coco’s Cupboard will remain his home for the rest of his life.

If that’s what the future holds, we can think of no better place for him to be.

He is safe. He is loved. He is challenged, enriched, and understood by people who see his potential instead of his past.

If Bondo does spend his life at Coco’s Cupboard, he will continue to require food, veterinary care, enrichment, training, and the extraordinary people who have poured so much of themselves into his success.

Sometimes saving a life doesn’t look the way we imagined. Sometimes it looks even better.
