Some dogs' stories are easy to tell. Mavi's has taken two years, two fundraisers, and a whole village to write — and we still don't know the ending. But for the first time in a long time, we're hopeful it's a happy one.
Before Mavi ever came to Doggie Harmony, she'd already been let down more times than any dog should have to count. Found as a stray after negligent owners let her go, Mavi spent a full year in and out of the shelter system. She was passed from one temporary foster to another — people who meant well but didn't have the time she needed. Each time, she landed back in a shelter kennel, waiting for someone to figure out what to do with her.
Nine times, Mavi was failed by the people who were supposed to help her.
Finally, a rescue up north committed to taking her in, and Mavi made the long trip from Georgia to New Jersey — one more disruption in a life that had already seen too many. By the time Doggie Harmony stepped in, she was showing real signs of stress from the chaos: a dog who had handled more than most ever will, but who badly needed structure, stability, and a chance to just be a dog.
In April 2024, we launched our first fundraiser, Mending Mavi, to get her into a board-and-train program with people who understood her and could help her decompress. Thanks to 62 donors who raised $3,605 toward that goal, Mavi got the rehabilitation she needed to become the dog we all knew she could be.
That was almost two years ago. Since then, Mavi has had exactly one foster home — and exactly one foster mom who has never once given up on her.
Two years is a long time for any foster to hold on, especially for a bigger dog. It's no secret that big dogs are having a harder time finding homes lately: fosters that used to run 3-6 months are stretching into 1-3 years for some of our dogs. Mavi's foster mom kept showing up anyway, giving her the safety and consistency she'd never had before her rescue.
This year, Mavi's foster mom faced her own health challenge: a surgery that would leave her unable to fully care for Mavi during recovery, with only her 11-year-old daughter at home to help. We launched a second fundraiser, a boarding fund for Mavi, to make sure Mavi had somewhere safe to stay for the month — and 9 donors stepped up to raise $825 toward that need.
In the end, foster mom made the call to power through and keep caring for Mavi herself. The boarding funds weren't needed after all — but your support meant that option was there when it mattered. We're holding those funds in reserve now, earmarked for training support if Mavi needs it whenever she transitions to a new home. After two years with the same foster, that change could be a big adjustment for her, and we want to be ready.
And now, the update we've hoped to write for two years: Mavi has potential adopters.
She's currently on a trial run with a couple who have another young dog of their own — playful, and a lot like Mavi. We're tentatively hopeful this could be the match that finally gives her the forever home she's waited so patiently for.
We don't know yet how the story ends. But whatever happens next, the donors who believed in Mavi from her very first fundraiser to her most recent one will be the first to know.
